Basic Life Support and Automated External Defibrillation (AED)

Would you know what to do if someone became unresponsive or suffered a cardiac arrest?

This practical four-hour course provides the essential skills and knowledge needed to respond confidently in a life-threatening emergency. It is suitable for members of the public who want to learn lifesaving skills, as well as employees, business owners, community groups, volunteers and anyone who may need to act in an emergency.

No previous first aid experience is required.

Participants will learn how to assess an emergency, recognise when someone is unresponsive or not breathing normally, summon professional help and provide immediate assistance until the emergency services arrive.

The course includes:

• Assessing an emergency situation safely
• Responsibilities and reporting
• Recognising an unresponsive casualty
• Placing a breathing casualty in the recovery position
• Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
• Recognising the signs of cardiac arrest
• Understanding how an automated external defibrillator works
• Using an AED safely and confidently
• Following defibrillation procedures and safety precautions
• Basic hygiene and infection control

The course combines clear instruction with practical exercises, giving every participant the opportunity to develop confidence in performing CPR and using an AED.

Whether you are attending to strengthen first aid provision within a workplace or simply want to be better prepared to help a family member, friend or someone in your community, this course provides valuable skills that could help save a life.

The course lasts four hours and includes practical and theoretical assessment. Successful participants will receive certification valid for three years.
